When is Bugum?
Bugum falls on the ninth day of Bugum Goli, “the month of fire”, the first month of the Dagomba lunar year, which lines up with Muharram in the Islamic calendar.12 A lunar year is about eleven days shorter than a calendar year, so Bugum comes round earlier each year: it fell in early July in 2025 and in late June in 2026.
The story of the fire
The most common telling is the search for a king’s lost son, made at night by torchlight; in some versions the king is named as Naa Zoligu, an early Ya-Naa of Dagbon.12 Another account links the torches to the night Noah’s ark came to rest. The names in the oldest story are no longer certain.1
What happens
As night falls, people light torches of dried grass and carry them through the streets and out of town, many dressed as warriors, with drumming and dancing.12 The biggest celebration is in Yendi, the seat of the Ya-Naa, but Tamale and towns across the north light up too.1
Good to know if you go
- Where: Tamale is the easiest base, with flights from Accra; Yendi, the traditional capital, is about two hours east.
- Fire safety: the torches are big and the crowds move fast. Wear closed shoes and cotton, not synthetics, and keep back from the flames.
- When: work out the date from the lunar calendar and confirm locally nearer the time.
- Respect the rites: some rituals are sacred and not for cameras. Ask before photographing chiefs, priests or anyone taking part, and follow what the ushers ask.
