Kwahu Easter

Easter homecoming on the Kwahu ridge

Kwahu Easter is the Easter homecoming of the Kwahu people of the Eastern Region. Every Easter weekend, Kwahu living in Accra, Kumasi and abroad return to the towns on the Kwahu ridge, joined by visitors from across Ghana. Since 2005 the long weekend has included paragliding off the Odweanoma mountain at Atibie, run by the Ghana Tourism Authority.

Why Easter means Kwahu

The Kwahu celebration grew out of the Akan festival Okwahu Afahye, which used to peak in December. Many Kwahu are traders who moved to Accra and Kumasi, and December was their busiest season, so by oral history the Kwahu Traditional Council moved the homecoming to the Easter break.1 It has been missed only in 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic.1

Paragliding at Atibie

Paragliding was added in 2005, taking off from the Odweanoma mountain at Atibie, and the Ghana Tourism Authority has run it each Easter since, with breaks in 2009 and during the pandemic.13 Visitors fly tandem with trained pilots; in 2023 the festival recorded 166 flights over four days.2

What happens over the weekend

Alongside the paragliding there are street carnivals, highlife concerts, a health walk and sports, and a great deal of visiting between families.1
