What Asafotufiam honours
The festival commemorates the victories of Ada’s ancestors in battle and honours those who died fighting. Warriors in battle dress re-enact the old events and stage mock battles, and it also opens the harvest season with purification rites.1
The grand durbar
The climax is the Saturday durbar. In 2024 chiefs in full regalia and palanquins and queens carried shoulder-high arrived at the grounds to singing and musket fire; women’s groups led brass bands, and the Asafo companies pledged loyalty to the paramount chief. That year the festival ran into the first week of August.2
Good to know if you go
- Where: Ada sits where the Volta meets the sea, about two hours east of Accra.
- Musketry: the guns are loud. Keep a distance and protect children’s ears.
- Check the dates: the traditional council sets the days each year, often only weeks ahead. Local radio and the national press carry the announcement.
- Respect the rites: some rituals are sacred and not for cameras. Ask before photographing chiefs, priests or anyone taking part, and follow what the ushers ask.
