The sacred weeks and the opening
- Early June
Six sacred weeks begin
Fishing in the lagoon and noise-making are banned. Fresh farm produce may not be sold in Elmina and fish only at the landing beaches; the bereaved may not wail, and anyone who dies is buried the same day.2
- Three weeks before
A fast for the gods
A holy wooden platter is turned over to begin a three-week fast for the gods, and priests and priestesses hold sacred drumming and dancing, the Dombo ceremonies.2
- First Tuesday of July
The net is cast
Chiefs, queen mothers and priests process from the palace to the lagoon. The Edinamanhen offers mashed yam, herbs and eggs to break the gods’ fast, then casts his net three times; each cast brings in fish, and the last is met with gunfire, music and dance.2 The ban is lifted and a regatta follows, with women’s groups out on the water in canoes.12
- Saturday
The durbar
The festival closes with a grand durbar on the forecourt of Elmina Castle.2
What Bakatue remembers
Bakatue marks the founding of Elmina. One telling has the founder, Kwa Amankwa, finding water at the stream he named Be-enya, and meeting a deity there who stayed for eight days; the festival honours that meeting.3
